About Cairns

When the British discovered Australia more than two centuries ago, they literally struck a gold mine. No wonder, many of its cities were built with the aim of getting closer to the gold source. One of these cities is Cairns, now a popular holiday destination, located in Far North Queensland.

Cairns old purpose as a gold mine route was soon superseded by other more accessible ways, but the city’s travel location made it an ideal trading port for sugarcane, gold and other minerals. Today, Cairns still retains its reputation as a commercial hub of the northern region of Queensland. Moreover tourism has been proven as a great income source, as the region offers vast and diverse scenery both for local and foreign tourists. In fact, Cairns ranks as the fourth most popular international tourist destination in Australia.

Cairns is a close starting point for tourists who seek the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef, which is just less than an hour boat ride away. Heading north, you will see the lush greeneries of Daintree National Park and Cape Tribulation, where tropical forests cover the rich earth. Also, Cooktown, Cape York Peninsula, Paronella Park, and the Atherton Tableland are within reach from the centre of Cairns.

Although Cairns is a cyclone-prone area, you can visit at times of the year when cyclones aren’t popular so you can enjoy a sunny and warm holiday.
