Cairns Information

The city of Cairns in far north Queensland is one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations. The city is located on the coastal plain with the Great Barrier Reef just offshore to the east and the rainforests of the Daintree and the Atherton tablelands to the north and the west. Cairns is a modern tourist city with a colourful past. The streets are extremely wide as in the past, teams of bullock drays brought produce to the port from hinterland farms and the width of the street was dictated by the turning circle of a fully loaded bullock team. Originally the city boasted over 50 hotels to cater for the thirst of the original settlers. Today the pubs are replaced by hotels, resorts, hostels and self catering apartments. Cairns accommodation leaves nothing to be desired with an astounding choice on offer and definitely something to suit your budget.
Cairns tours come in an enormous range with a multitude of tours and holiday activities on offer. With the Great Barrier Reef a short distance offshore there is a huge range of cruises and charters on offer as well as dive and snorkeling expeditions that run for either a day or for an extended period. There are so many options to choose from. Several operators have permanent pontoons anchored on the reef that provide a convenient and safe option to experience this world famous attraction. There are dive programs for beginners and the experienced diver alike, and destinations that range from local reefs through places such as the cod hole near Lizard Island and Mellish reef in the Coral Sea. Land based tours will take you to such places as the Daintree rainforest and Cape Tribulation, Cooktown and the attractions of the Atherton Tableland such as Lake Eacham, the Undara Lava Tubes and the Curtain Fig tree. Every tourist will want to experience the Skyrail from Cairns to Kuranda and return. You will journey up the range via the cablecar, travelling just over the canopy of the rainforest and then return to Cairns on the train. This will take you over the spectacular bridge that crosses over the Barron Falls which is very spectacular, especially in the wet season.
